COVID-19 has caused unprecedented lockdowns, and as a result many individuals and enterprises have had to make the shift to remote working, and remote spending.

Industries such as airlines, retail, and hospitality have had to undergo a complete overhaul of their traditional business practices, and virtually no industry has remained untouched.

As companies fight to stay afloat and adjust to the inevitable changes required to function as a result of COVID-19, quick adoption to remote work and spend have become paramount to a businesses success.

As enterprises implement new remote business practices, the need for API integration solutions becomes increasingly important.

More companies are beginning to utilize the cloud to store information, and are using more apps and online services to conduct their everyday operations. API solutions allow these companies to integrate their new technologies to ensure there are no interruptions in their operations.

The API integration market isn’t slowing down for a global pandemic; it’s ramping up. Even as the pandemic has forced companies to reduce their workforce or hiring practices, fundamental business needs have positioned the integration market to continue to grow well into the future.

MuleSoft is the leading API integration tool, with a customer base that’s doubled since 2018, and shows no signs of slowing down. MuleSoft provides the most widely used integration platform for connecting SaaS & enterprise applications in the cloud and on-premises. It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the economy, bringing many hiring processes to a halt, and resulting in mass layoffs.

As a result of COVID-19 the unemployment rate has risen, spending has reduced and many companies are finding themselves forced to drastically cut their expenses to stay afloat.

Some large firms have found themselves cutting upwards of 5% of their total workforce, while other firms have instituted temporary hiring freezes.

As companies attempt to navigate the new normal, they must continue to stay on top of technological advancements, or risk falling further behind. As companies try to balance their need for MuleSoft talent, with the need to adopt leaner business practices, they can find themselves at a crossroads.

The current model for API integration spend
In the current model for API integration implementation, companies have two options, to hire new employees with MuleSoft experience, or to train their current employees.

The average company in the United States spends about $4,000 when hiring a new employee, and it can take on average 52 days to fill a position. If a company uses a recruiter, this cost can skyrocket by up to 5 times that.

In an economy where cost reductions are paramount, companies do not have the time and money to spend on hiring employees.

The alternative option is to spend the money to train current employees in MuleSoft. These training programs can be costly for enterprises, and time consuming.

In addition to spending on training, companies have to spend capital on licensing. MuleSoft runs a subscription based model, where companies are prompted to re-subscribe every 12 months. In addition to the licensing fees, companies have to pay for additional features.

MuleSoft’s training program teaches students how to maximize the number of licenses, or cores required. Very little if any time is spent teaching students how to optimize or reduce the number of cores needed, making MuleSoft’s training an inefficient solution for companies looking to save on spending for MuleSoft licenses.

As companies strive to stay alive, adjust to the effects of the pandemic, and thrive, the ability to deploy and monitor APIs while still delivering the same excellent output becomes more crucial than ever to businesses’ success.

With that, API Monitoring solutions see a growing trend among businesses.

Through this, companies will be able to integrate their new technologies to ensure there are no disruptions in their operations despite employees working from home.

In our recent MuleSoft Study Group, we talked about API Monitoring, particularly the features of the AnyPoint Platform and how to have alerts configured in the API Manager whenever an error occurs.

Using an example of a property file that has three endpoints in its URL, we demonstrated how a payload works, as well as other features like a set variable, flow reference, and parse template.

There is a lot of improvisation that can be done through the AnyPoint studio. For example, for companies with a Dev-Ops Team, they can create a steady HTTP Listener and check it for updates, whether in the morning once they sign in for work or in the evening before signing out.

For the next MuleSoft study group session, our aim is to expand on the property file and application that we used for demonstration and add other interesting features such as:
